On Oct. 14, students were surprised to find an outdoor chess game set up during lunch outside the Student Union. Curiosity eventually took over, as students and teachers challenged each other to a friendly match. Both checkers and chess games were set up throughout the week.
“It was a great idea. My friends and I had a great time playing each other, especially in the beautiful weather,” said sophomore Alaz Sengul, who played garden chess against a group of friends.
While the activities were available on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, they will not become regular sights on campus. Activities Director Danielle Bowen said that keeping an element of surprise is part of the fun.
“The school day is long and boring at times, so we’ve decided to add some fun surprises to bring students closer,” said Activities Director Danielle Bowen.
Other game ideas include life-sized Connect 4 and Bowling. Students found the activities entertaining, making lunch time something to look forward to.
“I played all lunch period that I forgot to eat,” said junior Brian Gerstein, who beat his opponent during a lunchtime checkers match.
