On Friday Mar. 6 and Saturday Mar. 7, the Performing Arts department, under the leadership of Drama teacher Jessica Fox, presented Almost, Maine, a play about the struggles and turmoils of love through multiple couples.
A mixture of laughs and sighs, the play emphasized comical undertones to a plot focused on emotion and empathy. In the play, multiple ten minute scenes ranging from forgotten anniversaries to adolescent lovers depicted love in in prettiest, goofiest, and darkest forms.
Senior Allegra Kaufman explained that although the play is hilarious at times, it’s main purpose is to answer the question if love was a physical manifestation, what would it be like?
“I love that each scene depicts true moments that occur throughout love and life,” said Kaufman.
While some couples realized they were not meant for each other, others found the love of their lives, even if it involved enduring hardships including previous heartbreaks.
“I think the play was straightforward about the different facets of love. I love that it showed that all love is different and that love is never perfect, it involves effort,” said junior Isabella Aires.
Halfway through the show, the audience was able to treat themselves to an intermission of biscotti, coffee, and hot chocolate.
While each scene had it’s own conclusion, the play concluded with a girl returning to her boyfriend, even though he had faults. This reflected the main theme of the play about recognizing people as imperfect beings and emphasizing how love can only survive in an atmosphere of compromise and acceptance.
“I am extremely pleased with the performance of the students. I am also grateful for the help and support of the faculty and families involved in the production of the play, “ said Fox in the her opening speech.
