The NFL playoffs are beginning to close in on the Super Bowl which is taking place on Sunday, Feb. 12. While close to 100 million viewers are expected to tune in, many casual watchers are not aware of the complexity and history behind the event. This is a helpful catch-up of the essentials that make up the Super Bowl.
A quick explanation of the Super Bowl is that it is the annual championship game of the National Football League and is played between the winners of the AFC and NFC conferences.
The first Super Bowl was played on Jan. 15, 1967, and was known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game.
