Gaby Memmen’s “Shotbygmem” Popular Among Student Athletes

Gabriella Memmen
Sophomore Sophia Kingston gets ready to throw the ball into the net.

Photography. For junior Gaby Memmen, this is only a side hustle. Although she’s involved with her own extracurriculars, her photos have made their way to being recognized by many.

“I’m really passionate about photography. I would say it’s more personal related, but it’s gravitated towards being integrated with Gulliver and its sports,” she said.

As an ambitious photographer and videographer, Memmen targets her work to be more sports related as seen on her Instagram account @shotbygmem. Being an athlete herself, Memmen knows what to look for when snapping shots.

“I try and go to most games. I like being part of the sports community in a different aspect. Obviously I’m an athlete, but it’s kinda fun to be able to put myself into boys soccer and learn about other sports,” she explained.

Memmen discovered her love for the camera while not being able to participate on the court after suffering a concussion last year. Memmen taught herself how to use the optical device in her free time.

“I wasn’t allowed to play basketball or be on the court doing anything basketball related. My friend had a camera and he told me I could use it while they were playing games and I fell in love with looking at basketball in a different perspective,” said Memmen.

Taking pictures is not a chore for Memmen. She is not currently partaking in the journalism course but does this simply for herself. This one hobby, alongside many, is something she claims she, “just enjoys doing.”

“Some people enjoy drawing and some people enjoy writing. This is just what I like doing,” she said.

A common reposter for Memmen’s work is student Jackson Mansfield; player on the Gulliver Boys Varsity Basketball team. Mansfield recognizes Memmens’ passion for the camera.

“Gaby’s photography is different because of her editing and the way she captures people in the moment at unique angles,” Mansfield said.

Memmen continues to attend games and update us through her talent with the camera.

“I’ve been curating a portfolio to show colleges so I can continue doing sports photography at whatever college I attend,” Memmen stated.
