“Wednesday” officially came out on Nov. 23, 2022 after being advertised throughout the entire year. With the show being out for less than a month now, I think it’s time to talk about how much good feedback and the success the show has gotten.

It’s important to note that this show does include a lot of mystery and thriller— with a particularly morbid edge— so it might not be for everyone. Even if you never catch yourself watching those genres, I still recommend giving it a try because the rabbithole of a mystery is introduced from episode one, leaving you hooked. This show had me on my feet the whole time. From laughing, to crying, to being anxious for the characters, “Wednesday” took me through every emotion.

First off, I want to start with the cast of this show which I absolutely loved. Jenna Ortega, who plays Wednesday Addams, was absolutely incredible in her portrayal of the character. She had that perfect Tim Burton look carried into reality. From the moment I first found out Ortega was playing Wednesday, I knew the show was going to be good. From her quick and witty comebacks to the emotionless expressions, Ortega was meant for this role.

Moving onto some of the other characters. I felt like Luis Guzman, who portrayed Gomez Addams, was amazing for the role. His humor was  the best and although we didn’t see too much of him this season, Guzman gave Gomez an entirely unique feel, different from any previous iterations.

Something else I think the writers of the show did  well was creating a backstory to side characters. They really showed how each character was going through something behind closed doors. It created some sort of equality between the main characters, like Wednesday herself, and side characters like Xavier (Percy Hynes White), Enid (Emma Myers), Bianca (Joy Sunday), and Tyler (Hunter Doohan). Each of these characters had a reason for why they are the way they are, which I thought was something most shows lack, making this one different and special.

The different storylines and backgrounds of the side characters, made for an amazing and interesting plotline. Not only did some of the characters’ storylines set up a ton of new mysteries for the confirmed season 2, but they also were ways to get to know the characters. With a tricky plot can come many plot holes, and that’s something that I never found while watching “Wednesday”. Everything that was mentioned was given a backstory and explained later on in the series, except for the cliffhangers that give season two a perfect set up.

I also love how much emphasis was put on the fact that Wednesday was trying to solve these mysteries and crimes while still going through change. This allows for people to resonate with a character like Wednesday. Throughout the show, she is evolving as a friend and as a person while facing challenges like the psychic visions she’s been having. That was one of my favorite aspects to show, the fact that they made a rarely relatable character, relatable.

I want to talk about the scenery and the coloring that they put into this show: absolutely incredible. Whenever there was a happier moment in the show, I noticed that the screen would be full of bright colors whereas in a moment of sadness, there would be dull colors. The scenery and tone of each season was carried through colors. While Wednesday was having difficult moments with herself and her family as well as the situations around her, you can immediately tell what the emotion was when the colors hit the screen.

Finally, we also need to talk about how amazing it was that the creators of the show got Christina Ricci to play a role in this series. Ricci portrayed Wednesday Addams in the 1991 movie “The Addams Family”. It’s also so important to me that they made her a side character at first but when the ending of the first season is near, she starts becoming more important (for the worse though). I think making her the villain was the biggest plot twist ever and was such a good acknowledgement to the original actress of Wednesday Addams. It would’ve been awful if they just had her as a side character with no background. They instead made her the villain!
