On Monday, Dec. 13, the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 draw had to be redone due to a technical problem.

The original Round of 16 matchups were: Benfica vs. Real Madrid, Villarreal CF vs. Manchester City, Atletico Madrid vs. Bayern Munich, RB Salzburg vs. Liverpool, Inter Milan vs. Ajax, Sporting CP vs. Juventus, Chelsea vs. LOSC Lille and Paris Saint-Germain vs. Manchester United

EUFA announced through a Twitter post: “Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.”

Manchester United was incorrectly placed in the draw against Spanish team Villareal. These two teams were not eligible to play each other since they faced each other before in their group stage. United’s draw was also left out of the teams that could play Spanish team Atletico Madrid.

“I think that they should’ve kept the same results as the first draw instead of redoing them,” said freshman Juanfra Gudino. “I did like the draw when they chose names first but not when they redid it. I don’t really think it was rigged.”

Although many believe it wasn’t rigged, some believe it was.

“They needed to give better teams an easier chance, instead of making the matchups good teams vs. good teams, they wanted to make it bad teams vs. good teams,” said freshmen Martin Larsen. “I think it’s driven by money and UEFA wants a higher audience for these final stages.

One of the main games of the original draw was between Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). This game shocked and surprised everyone since Cristiano Ronaldo plays for Manchester United and Lionel Messi plays for PSG.

“I was really excited to see this matchup, I personally prefer Messi, so I would prefer that PSG won. It is unfortunate that this game got canceled due to the malfunction in the system, but hopefully we will get to see these two teams play in the later stages of the Champions League,” said sophomore Isabella Berto.

The new matchups for the Round of 16 are: RB Salzburg vs. Bayern Munich, Sporting CP vs. Manchester City, Benfica vs. Ajax, Chelsea vs. LOSC Lille, Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester United, Villareal vs. Juventus, Inter Milan vs. Liverpool and PSG vs Real Madrid.
