As the seasons change and fall approaches, the end is near for the class of 2025. While leaving for college seems like a daunting end of a chapter, it is also the start of a new beginning, a clean slate. In the fall, we will leave home and start to build one of our own, and the first step is to make the most of our new space.
Unfortunately, you have little control over what dorm you get. Whether or not you have a private bathroom, big windows, or enough space for all your belongings is based on luck; however, you can control how you add a bit of your identity. The most important thing in finding ways to decorate this new home is making the most of the space you’ve been given, which is why finding unique ways to organize yourself is essential.
Urban Outfitters has a lot of small bookshelves with versatility that allows them to fit into any aesthetic you choose. My pick is the Alana Narrow Storage Shelf. I love it in sage green, but it also comes in black and white. You can use it for books, shoes, clothes, self-care products, candles, and artsy decorations.
Another cute organizational find from Urban is the Lola Nightstand. What makes it work well for your dorm the spaces on its side that you can use to put any extra things you can’t find a place for. A final practical find is the Round Storage Cart from Pottery Barn, with a minimalistic design, three rows of space, and wheels to move around your dorm effortlessly.
In addition to finding places for your personal and academic belongings, you must find a spot for snacks. A quick snack is a must-have during your study session when you don’t feel like running to the food court, and your mom isn’t around to make you something nice. The Galanz mini fridge available at Pottery Barn is the perfect size as it’s big enough for plenty of food but doesn’t take up too much space. A pro tip is that you can also use it to store your skincare.
Although the ultimate comfort can be easily achieved through food, you may crave a hug after a long day away from home, dealing with professors, and seemingly endless studying. A plush, thick comforter may do the trick in these tough times. I personally like the Honeycomb Cotton Comforter from Pottery Barn. It comes in six colors and is among the few quality comforters in Twin sizes. However, the European Flax Linen Waffle Comforter is better if you want something a little softer and more boyish.
However, making your bed your own requires more than just a nice comforter. Throw pillows can elevate your space. West Elm has a lot of floor and throw pillows for extra comfort and decor, but my choice is the Classic Velvet Tufted Round Pillow. But for a more preppy look, the RHODE Lotus Pillow Cover comes in second.
You might want a rug to create a comfortable vibe, but a small one that doesn’t creep into your roommate’s side. The double sheepskin rug has a fun, squiggly shape that covers just enough to give you a warm embrace when you step out of bed in the morning.
After browsing several sites, I have selected my favorite picks, but if you struggle to
find the best way to match everything together. Pottery Barn Teen has layouts of dorms that resonate with various tastes and personalities.
