The rowing varsity team kicked off the new season by competing in their First Regatta on Oct. 5. Skills used in practice helped lead to their outstanding performance.
The event displayed the rowing team’s committed preparation in the off-season, practicing for future regattas. The stakes were high, as it was the first regatta of the season, with many other schools in the area, like Ransom and Belen, competing. According to the Head Coach Franky Viacava, the rowing athletes train two hours after school daily to keep in shape for the event.
“Rowing is a very physically demanding sport—the regatta is a great example. Given our performance, I know what aspects we are strong at and what needs improvement,” Coach Viacava said.
The races are typically around 4 to 5 thousand meters. Rowing prioritizes practice and, most importantly, conditioning to succeed on the water. Athletes utilize the new Athletic Center’s rowing machines during practice for conditioning—all to gain endurance and simulate the high-speed nature going to be experienced on game day.
“We have to work hard to get stronger so we can row faster. There are lots of machines that we can use. Everyone has to work hard together to succeed,” sophomore Rower Luisa Tripodi said.
Teamwork is crucial, with each member taking a vital role when competing. Before heading on the water, the entire team collaborates to help set up canoes. Each person helps each other out in the end to succeed. Working as a team is crucial when competing to limit stress, this means each member working independently to overall work better together.
“I like that you have independence during practice. You’re still having someone coach you on the side but there’s a lot of independent things you can do,” freshman Rower Lars Goodrich said.
The rowers have the responsibility to work individually and train hard, for their own benefit. The blend of independence and guidance makes rowing unlike other sports, allowing rowers to train in the best way for them.
Each of the rowers trains hard, to do better in future competitions. Maximizing arm strength through the rowing machines and individual practices helps the team progress in future regattas.
As the season progresses, the team looks forward to more competitions, striving to excel in ranks and abilities. The dedication and hard work of each individual will lead to success in future regattas.
