The College Counseling Department will host a two-hour after-school workshop for Seniors beginning to write their supplemental essays. The event will take place Aug. 26 starting at 3:30 in the Shah Family Library Media Center on the second floor on campus.
Seniors should make sure they take the time to prepare these supplements in particular because they can weed out students applying for superficial reasons.
“Essentially it is a way for a college to figure out if a student actually knows what the college offers. Are you applying because you are really interested in that program within that college or because that college has a fancy, recognizable name?” Director of College Counseling Bernadette Condesso said.
The workshop will provide students with resources, templates, and research methods for preparing specific, evidence-based reasons for applying to a given college. Making sure to address the specialties of a given program such as research, study abroad, and internship opportunities can make or break a college application. Making these attributes personal to you can also be a great aid.
“One of the things I would advise students to do coming into the workshop is to know what [they are] bringing to that college and that program,” Condesso said.
Students are looking forward to the workshop and to receiving help in completing their supplemental essays.
“I think [the workshop]’ll be very beneficial because most colleges require the ‘Why us?’ essay and it’s a good opportunity to learn what colleges want,” senior Alexa Smith said.
