Five Movies to Spook you this Halloween
October 27, 2022
Here are some of the best (and my favorite) scary movies that will be sure to spook you out this Halloween.
Hereditary (2018)
“Hereditary” is a horror movie that was produced by A24 and released in 2018. Although I’m not ranking these movies depending on how scary they are, this movie has to go first on my list just because of how much it terrified me. It’s a movie that’s fairly well known but not one that everybody has heard about. The movie “Hereditary” is about the recent passing of a grandmother who has a very dark and terrifying past. Like the movie title says, these twisted things tied to her are hereditary and are inherited by her children and grandchildren. The movie’s plot incorporates a lot of plot twists and terrifying scenes that won’t let you sleep at night. I’m pretty good with horror movies and typically don’t get scared by them, but this one I couldn’t get over after my first watch. When I first saw this movie, the mother (portrayed by Toni Collette) stood out to me the most. You don’t have to be a professional in film to notice how well of a job Collette did in this movie. Her acting and performance definitely stood out to me the most and terrified me as well. The rest of the cast included: Alex Wolff as the son, Milly Shapiro as the daughter, and Gabriel Byrne as the father. I can’t imagine a better cast for this movie because they all truly gave it their all into making it the most eerie and unsettling movie ever. You can find this movie on Prime Movie, Hulu (with premium subscription), Youtube, Paramount +, and more.
Midsommar (2019)
Midsommar horror/thriller movie that was released in 2019 that was also produced by A24 (It’s something about those A24 films that speak out to me). This movie was more unsettling rather than scary but it deserves to be in this list for that very reason. Midsommar mostly takes place in Sweden when Pelle (portrayed by Vilhelm Blomgren) invites a group of friends over to visit his rural hometown where they host a Midsummer celebration. Things begin to take a turn for the worse and this “festival” is panning out to be led by a violent and competitive cult. One thing that really stood out to me the moment I saw this movie was how they made the scenery so beautiful yet had the most twisted plot that a movie can. It really gives the viewer a different impression at first of how the movie will pan out. This cast is full of very talented actors/actresses with the main character Dani played by Florence Pugh. Pugh’s performance was incredible and really captivates the viewer on a bone chilling experience. Other actors that play big parts in the movie are: Will Poulter, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, and Vilhelm Blomgren. You can watch this movie on Hulu (premium subscription), Primer Video, Showtime, Youtube, and more.
Get Out (2017)
This movie was released in 2017 and was directed by Jordan Peele. Peele has directed movies like “Us”, “Nope”, and “Candyman”. As Chris and Rose’s relationship is getting more serious, Rose decides to take Chris to meet her parents for the weekend. Chris knew that the fact that their relationship is interracial was going to be a problem, but the events that took place definitely went above his expectations in a negative way. Get Out is one of the most mind boggling movies I’ve ever seen. The main character Chris is portrayed by academy award winner Daniel Kaluuya and his performance was incredible. The rest of the cast consists of: Allison Williams as the girlfriend, Catherine Keener as the mother, and Bradley Whitford as the father. The performance from Keener and Whitford truly kept me on my feet and left this eerie suspenseful feeling anytime they were on the screen. If you want to get spooked out, this movie is a definite watch. You can stream this movie on Hulu (premium subscription), Prime Video, Apple TV, and Youtube.
Black Swan (2010)
Black Swan is a 2010 drama/thriller movie. The main character Nina, portrayed by academy award winner Natalie Portman, has a passionate connection to dance and ballet. When the company she dances for decides to have a production of Swan Lake, Nina’s immediately considered for the part of White Swan. Things take a turn when Lily, portrayed by Mila Kunis, is competition because she is more like the Black Swan. This creates a twisted rivalry where Nina’s mind gets the best of her and she begins to show her true colors showing just how important this part means to her. Natalie Portman actually won an Academy Award for her role in this movie along with many awards for her portrayal of Nina. Other supporting characters were Thomas Leroy (played by Vincent Cassel) and Erica Sayers (played by Barbara Hershey). The first time I saw this movie I was left with a shocked look on my face and so many questions. There are many unsettling clips that are part of this movie and a couple of jump scares. This is definitely a must watch to spook you out this Halloween. You can find it on Hulu, Prime Video, Youtube, Apple TV, and more.
Scream (1996)
One word: classic. By now, everyone should have watched this movie at least once in your life. If you haven’t then I’m here to tell you all about it. Now, there are many movies that come after this one but trust me when I say that the original Scream is the best. The original movie was released in 1996 and is a slasher horror movie with a little bit of comedy. It’s all about a ghostfaced killer on the loose who’s targeting high school students. There is one girl in particular, Sidney (portrayed by Neve Campbell) who is the ghostface main subject. This movie is full of surprises and jump scares along with plot twists. I’ve rewatched this movie several times and I never get bored of it. Aside from Campbell, the cast includes: Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Drew Barrymore, Mathew Lillard, and Rose McGowan. All these performances from each individual actor really makes the movie special and a classic horror movie to this day. You can find this movie on Apple TV, Prime Video, Youtube, and more.
