On Wednesday, Oct. 8, the Middle School and High School Swim teams went head-to-head with the Ransom Everglades Raiders in an invitational. It was the only home meet of the season, and with the season nearing its end, many swimmers looked to qualify for states. The meet also served as Senior Day, celebrating Eva Hernandez Vidal and Sophia Kingston.
“All of the seniors this year have helped mentor all of us swimmers by offering support, especially for those of us that are new to the sport,” sophomore Emma Preston said.
The boys’ varsity team started off strong, with their A and B teams placing first and second out of four teams in the 200-yard relay. Freshman Eric Macedo led the way, swimming a 22-second split in the relay. Macedo also placed first in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by junior Loic Attie, setting a personal best of 1:59.
In the boys 200 200-yard individual medley – a race that includes butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle – Macedo placed first, and junior Bernie Musicello set a personal best of 2:10 while placing second, giving the Raiders a strong lead. The team went on to win 89-81.
“I thought that the way the team performed and the way that everyone did was amazing, especially for a meet so important, seeing as it was Senior Night,” sophomore Alejandro Altman said. “Everyone did what they needed to do, even if they didn’t like it, and that’s what led us to the win.”
On the girls’ side, freshman Thereza Lara Nogueira Milano won the 200-yard freestyle and set a personal best of 2:01. The team also shone in the 200-yard relay, winning dramatically. The meet came down to the wire, but the Raiders ended up falling short, 85-83.
The Raiders look to continue their dominance as they retake the pool Thursday, Oct. 9, at Belen Jesuit.
“I think we did great at the meet, and we couldn’t have done it without Coach Nick because he told us every little thing we had to do,” junior Bernie Musicello said. “For the future, we have to focus on districts so the team can make it to states.”
