Varying policies on counterfeit goods across platforms can leave buyers confused about where to shop and their level of protection.
Depop, a favorite among younger, more trend-focused shoppers, thrives on its community-driven marketplace. Sellers list items directly, and buyers rely on descriptions, reviews, and ratings to assess legitimacy. Still, reports of counterfeit goods slipping through have raised concerns. With a strict prohibition on the sale of counterfeit items, the platform encourages users to report suspicious listings, but enforcement can be inconsistent, leaving buyers to shoulder much of the responsibility. A previously frequent Depop shopper, junior Valentina Ruiz, shared her own experience with the platform.
“I used to buy off of Depop often since they had really good prices for pieces I was interested in. I never had a problem till I bought a piece that I was unaware was a counterfeit,” Ruiz said.
Depop’s policy mandates that sellers must issue a full refund to the buyer if the product is found to be a counterfeit or not as described. Notably, buyers are not required to return counterfeit items to sellers, as shipping counterfeit goods is illegal, but Ruiz’s experience states otherwise.
When Ruiz brought the problem to the seller, they blocked her and deleted their account, which led her to reach out to Depop’s team. She explained that they weren’t much help since the emails sent back are from automated robots and there is no actual number to call. When the team finally did reach out, there were still further implications.
“They asked me to send the item back to the seller within a specific time frame, but I wasn’t able to as I was busy, and they told me that they were not going to open up another dispute. I never received a refund for my product and had to personally contact my credit card company to get my money back, which, of course, took months,” Ruiz said.
Grailed, often associated with streetwear and luxury men’s/women’s wear, offers a slightly more reliable approach. A team of in-house moderators reviews listings to assess authenticity and remove inauthentic listings. Items that pass the review receive a “Digitally Authenticated” badge on their listing page; However, not all items undergo this process. The platform also partners with PayPal to offer buyer protection. This safety net appeals to users who want affordable luxury without compromising too much on security.
Even with these measures, buyers are advised to scrutinize listings and communicate directly with sellers to avoid disappointment.
“Communicating with a seller before purchasing is so important. The pictures posted can sometimes be deceiving, as sellers can edit scuffs and other things out. Getting a seller to also say that an item is authentic can save you in the long run if they happen to be lying,” Ruiz said.
For shoppers seeking a quick, easy, and extremely protected purchase, platforms like The RealReal and Vestiaire Collective position themselves as leaders in authentication. The RealReal, in particular, is well-known for employing a team of experts who check all items before they are listed to help them determine a fair price for its condition, and to confirm authenticity. This process has earned the platform a strong reputation. Similarly, Vestiaire Collective offers an optional paid authentication service, giving buyers an extra layer of security. Sophomore Ana Luiza Fortuna de Oliveira shares her experience.
“I have shopped on both The RealReal and Vestiaire Collective, but I really like Vestiaire Collective,” Oliveira said.
Vestiaire Collective stands out not only for its security but also for its extensive selection of designer goods. With a strict authentication process and a wide range of luxury brands, the platform provides a reliable and diverse shopping experience for those in the fashion realm.
”Vestiaire Collective is just really easy to use, and there are a lot of items to choose from. I’ve never experienced an issue while buying from them,” Oliveira said.
While these platforms have made strides in creating safer marketplaces, the presence of counterfeits underscores the need for continued improvement. Many consumers are calling for stricter policies, more transparency, and guarantees from platforms that claim to authenticate luxury goods. Without these assurances, even the most trusted names in the second-hand industry risk losing buyer confidence.
As the resale market continues to grow, the effort remains on both buyers and platforms to prioritize honesty and care. Whether you are hunting for a rare vintage find or a discounted designer handbag, knowing where and how to shop is key. For now, the balance between affordability, authenticity, and trust remains a hard one, but shoppers and sellers are both hopeful for a future where sustainability and security can truly go hand in hand.
