With a record of 19-3-2, the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team has defied expectations this season – only to see their journey come to an unexpected end. In a hard-fought game on Tuesday, the Raiders lost 3-2 to American Heritage in the state semi-final, dashing their hopes of reaching the state final this Friday and not acquiring a three-peat.
The journey to this moment has not been as easy as it once was. Unlike last year’s flawless run, this season has tested the team with two losses that encouraged them to improve their techniques.
“A season with a Palm League, District, and Regional Championship is something to be extremely proud of. We have to be very proud of our seniors and learn from their attitude, passion, and commitment to make sure we have the discipline to get back on track,” Assistant Coach Federico Mor-Tatis said.

Leadership on the field was crucial throughout the season. Senior midfielder and Captain Nicolas Piñeros consistently stepped up in critical moments, setting the tone for the rest of the team. His ability to stay calm during high-pressure situations was mirrored by his teammates, who have grown more cohesive with each challenge.
Sophomore center midfielder Santiago Mendoza shared insight into the adjustments they have made along the way that have defined their season.
“Sometimes we will watch the games over as a team and see what we did wrong so that the next practice we would work on what we need to improve,” Mendoza said.
Sophomore right-wing Youssef Elzomor also highlighted the obstacles he himself has overcome throughout the season. He was a dedicated member of the team, even when he faced personal setbacks. After suffering a broken arm during the regional semifinal, Elzomor was forced to watch from the sidelines during the state semifinal. However, he remains positive about the team’s future.
“My teammates and I have worked very hard to get to this point. I believe our journey as a team isn’t over yet and there will be much success in the future,” Elzomor said.
The passion of Raider fans has served as an inspiring force behind the team’s drive to succeed. Although dreams of bringing home the state title this year are no longer possible, fans and families have rallied behind the Raiders, with unwavering support and packed stands at every game. The team’s ranking currently lies at #5 in the state and #8 in the country.
As the season comes to a close, big questions still remain: What lessons will the team carry with them for next season? And with several senior leaders graduating, how will younger players step up to fill key roles?
Coach Fede (Federico Mor-Tatis) remains optimistic about the coming season.
“Every player has to be willing to be bought in 100%, work hard, work right, and do things by the book. Only then will we be able to be successful again next season,” Mor-Tatis said.
While the dream of a three-peat has slipped away for now, the Raiders story is one of dedication, overcoming obstacles, and the pursuit of excellence—which will continue to inspire the school community as they look ahead into next season.
