On Thursday, Feb. 13 the first track meet of the season occurred with the Raiders set to compete in various events. The event took place at Christian Calvary School beginning at 3:45 pm.
The Raiders participated in events such as distance races, relays, and field events like the long jump. The meet marks the season’s start, allowing athletes to compete and assess their current performance levels.
Head Coach of the track team, David Suarez shared his thoughts on the athlete’s preparation.
“The athletes have been preparing for this meet. I think our athletes are looking forward to competing at high-level meets so they can show off all the hard work they’ve done in the pre-season,” Suarez said.
Among the competitors is Deandre Leonard, a sophomore sprinter who won multiple events last season and sophomore distance runner Emilio Perez-Garcia has also achieved personal records during pre-season training.
“I’m excited to be able to break new school records this year. We have been training hard and building up our endurance,” Leanord said.
In preparation for the meet, the athletes have been training daily, focusing on conditioning and technical improvements. While coaches have been working daily with them to improve their techniques and speed.

“We try to replicate competition day as best we can in practice. Keeping competition levels high in practice while making sure we’re doing lots of specific training to prepare them for each of their events,” Suarez said.
Many family members, friends, and other members attended the track meet to show their support to the runners.
“Being able to look into the stands and see your family or friends watching is something everyone would love to see. Seeing the support allows us to compete at our best ability. Having people cheering you on makes a huge difference,” junior Carlota Moreno said.
The meet allowed the coaches to give team members insight and room for development throughout the season. Coaches and athletes will analyze the results to adjust placement.
“I’m most excited about getting our new athletes exposure to competition. Because we have so many new athletes, a lot of their journeys begin with this one meet and it makes an impact which can lead them to appreciate the sport and their team,” Suarez said.
With all the preparation and advice given, the Raiders could perform to their full potential, placing high times in all events. Junior sprinter Dennis Obsaint was able to place 8th overall in the men’s 100m, with a time of 11.56 seconds. Sophomore Mia Lavalle placed 9th in the women’s 100m and third in the women’s 200m relay bringing the Raiders higher in the rankings and breaking her new personal record.
