On Jan. 17, the Boys Varsity Soccer Team pulled an impressive come-from-behind victory on Senior Night against Florida Christian at Sean Taylor ‘01 Memorial Field.
With emotion riding high, especially for the seniors, the team looked to continue its momentum after a four-game win streak.
Both teams started the game slow offensively, with the heavy rains not helping either team. Still, clutch tackles from Defenseman senior Chris Murciano and junior Gabriel Derzavich kept the score 0-0 through the majority of the first half.
However, a goal from Florida Christian put the Raiders at a 1-0 deficit, but quickly responded with a header goal by junior Jacob Lombard. Lombard, although a center-back, has scored three goals in the last four games.
As the clock started to dwindle, tension started to rise, and both teams continued to go back and forth. On offense, senior Captains Nicolas Piñeros and Jorge Gouvea both had assists and created opportunities for their teammates to score.
With six minutes left in the game, a diving goal from junior defenseman Justin Merner put the Raiders in the lead, completing a comeback to remember.
“Before the play, we were tied and the momentum was split between both teams, so to score that goal really helped and was a really good feeling, especially because it put us ahead and we were able to win the game because of it,” Merner said.
