Last Friday, the school transformed into a vibrant cultural showcase as parents from Francophone countries hosted the annual Francophone Village event. This celebration of French-speaking cultures united students, families, and educators in a day filled with music, art, culinary delights, and cultural activities.
The event began with parents singing traditional French songs and playing music from countries like Haiti and Switzerland. Participants danced and clapped along to rhythms, creating a lively atmosphere of shared cultural appreciation.
A highlight of the Francophone Village was its diverse culinary offerings from France, Canada, Haiti, and beyond. Students eagerly lined up to sample unique dishes like Haitian patties, Canadian poutine, and an array of sweet treats, each representing the rich gastronomic traditions of Francophone regions.
“Bringing a positive light to Haiti and its culture was truly enjoyable, especially considering how the media often portrays it negatively. It was truly a beautiful atmosphere that allowed us all to share and, most importantly, taste different dishes and appreciate our cultures,” parent and teacher Ady Timmer said.
Parent and student volunteers played a crucial role in the event’s success, working collaboratively to ensure a smooth and engaging experience. The day fostered a strong sense of community, with conversations flowing and cultural insights shared freely.
“The Francophonie is not just about a shared language but also about celebrating the diversity of cultures among French-speaking communities worldwide,” Stephanie Milon, the head organizer of the event, said.
More than just an occasion, the Gulliver Francophone Village was a powerful celebration of identity, heritage, and the unifying power of language and cultural exchange. Beyond the initial festivity, it served as an important teaching opportunity, offering a lesson in world citizenship for the students.
Gulliver students gained firsthand exposure to the richness of Francophone countries and cultures. They also gained insight into the connectedness of our world and the mutual understanding facilitated through shared experiences in music, food, and conversation.
