While other sports rest for their season, head varsity coach Erik Cartellie and head JV coach Gabe Telleria have been hosting preseason Lacrosse practice for aspiring athletes since school started on the Gulliver Prep Campus in late August .
“Without a doubt, this offseason practice is essential to building stronger, deeper teams… we’ve already shaken off the summer rust and refined our stick work in live-game settings. Our offense is also making strides with more versatile players, we are focusing on off-ball movement and positioning to create better scoring opportunities, added with an additional year of understanding our system” coach Erik Cartelle said.
Lacrosse players, both varsity and junior varsity, agree that the preseason practice has helped them get back on their feet after a relaxing summer.
“Concerning the fact that the team hasn’t played Lacrosse all summer and they’re finally getting back into it, I’d only think it’d be beneficial for the team,” JV lacrosse player Noah Haque said.
“In Lacrosse practice we’ve actually been lifting as a team, we also train our stick skills and how to shoot. Overall I think the most beneficial out of those three was weightlifting,” Haque said.
Athletes didn’t just train on the campus however, with an additional 7 on 7 league being started. This benefited the players allowing them to get back into an actual game environment for Lacrosse.
“It got me back into the actual game of Lacrosse, other than training… It also lets me know my new teammates that are coming from other schools or are Freshman this year” Varsity lacrosse player Trip Gettler said.
Players and coaches are in agreement that these preseason practices have a massive effect on and off the field for the team.
“Because of all of our off-season work on the field and in the gym we have fewer injuries during the season,” head junior varsity lacrosse coach Gabe Telleria.
