For the first time in school history, on Tuesday afternoon, on the Sean Taylor ‘01 Memorial Field, students and staff gathered to watch the Powderpuff game, a Homecoming spirit week event in which girls across grades 9-12 took the field for flag football while boys cheered on the sidelines as cheerleaders. The game featured a 7v7 competition, with the sophomores and seniors facing off against the freshmen and juniors.
“Since typically it’s the guys that are on the field, this game gave us a different sense of unity and it was really entertaining to
watch because of the incredible atmosphere the students were creating,” sophomore class president Simon Perry said. “ I really enjoyed watching this and I look forward to more activities like this in the future that will bring our class together.”
Senior Gabriella Memmen initiated the event, which brought the school community together in a fun and unique way.
“I thought it would be really fun to do this event that would bring the whole school together for a spirit-filled activity since it had never been done before,” Memmen said.
Although the game was ultimately a success, in its preparation, there were some issues, Memmen, who had ordered the jerseys for the players three months in advance, received a call from Amazon customer service just two days before the event, informing her that the jerseys had never been shipped from China.
Memmen quickly purchased pink and blue shirts, printing the players’ last names on them in time for the game.
Despite a minor setback, the game continued, and students still had a great experience.
“I had so much fun being part of the Powderpuff team,” sophomore Amaya Mejia said. “I hope they do it again next year, it was something different and cool.”
Practices were held ahead of time for the game to help prepare the girls, which contributed to the anticipation and success of the event.
The seniors and sophomores ended up taking the win with players like Mikaela Navarro ‘25 and Gabriella Memmen‘25 leading them to victory.
