The Be the Light Club, under Key Club, focuses on providing scholarships for students who demonstrate financial need so they may attend private highschools. Through their “Passion Project” and opportunities for service, Be the Light aims to positively impact the lives of children in Miami.
“I decided to join the club because I’m interested in what it’s about,”sophomore Angelina Zapater said. “I want to help kids who are struggling to be happier.”
Alina Gonzalez, this year’s club sponsor, has a personal connection with the family of Ari Arteaga. Arteaga, who began an Instagram page to share his personal motto, ‘Be the Light’, tragically passed away at just 16 in a car accident. Even without him,
his family and friends continue to lead the community service foundation in his memory.
“My favorite part about being the sponsor is seeing the community coming together; Westminster, Gulliver and Ruth Owens,” Gonzalez said. “We also have something to learn from one another.”
The “Passion Project,” which could take up to two years, will transform an abandoned horticulture area—currently just a slab of concrete surrounded by grass—into a tranquil Zen reading garden. The goal is to provide a calming space for students with severe behavioral disorders and learning disabilities. Students like President Sebastian Luna are excited to be a part of the change.
“I think it is really important to give someone another chance and that’s why I’m happy to be a part of this amazing club new to our school,” Luna said. “I hope we can really make a difference and help students achieve success.”
The club will also sponsor multiple fundraising and community service events throughout the school year. The first, scheduled for the end of October, will have members collect orchids that will be planted in the Zen reading garden. Further details and information on future opportunities will be provided on the Google Classroom.
